In order to accelerate and promote energy renovation in residential buildings, the LIFE-GiDomus project was launched this October with a kick-off session held in Olot.
Funded by the LIFE program of the European Commission, the project is based on the expansion of the successful Domus One-Stop Shop (OSS) model developed by the Europace Foundation, which optimizes the experience for homeowners, aggregates local initiatives, and promotes the training of industry professionals. Additionally, LIFE-GiDomus will incorporate a self-sustainable business model that integrates innovative financing methods, ensuring long-term viability.
Through this OSS model, the consortium aims to support homeowners throughout the renovation process by facilitating and simplifying the renovation journey. The service will focus on administrative advice, supporting license processing, grants, and incentives; technical advice, providing energy diagnostics and habitability services, offering a trusted network of professional technicians; and financial advice, incorporating crowdfunding solutions as a mechanism to involve citizens in the energy renovation of homes.
GiDomus will be implemented over the next 3 years in the province of Girona, with plans to replicate it in other regions of Catalonia and Spain following the introduction of the new European Energy Efficiency Directive.
During this period, the consortium plans to renovate a total of 850 homes with a total investment of €12 million through the deployment of 7 OSS offices in the Girona region. In parallel with these actions, the project also aims to serve as a training space for new professionals in the field of energy transition. By the end of its execution, GiDomus is expected to have trained around 1,200 professionals.
The consortium is made up of the Catalonia Efficient Energy Cluster, the Europace Foundation, the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research, Ecoserveis, Social Innovation for Communities Upsocial, R2M Solutions, Ecrowd Invest, and the National Federation of Energy Managers.
The precedent of GarrotxaDomus
In 2020, the Europace Foundation developed an integrated housing renovation service called the Domus program, based on the OSS model. This service is fully self-sustaining and overcomes the inherent barriers in the process while generating demand.
This service led to the first program of its kind, GarrotxaDomus, which has been running for four years in the Garrotxa region. It serves over 1,200 users and has generated more than 300 energy renovation projects, achieving an average savings of 30% in CO2 emissions and non-renewable primary energy consumption. In this context, LIFE-GiDomus arises from the need to streamline and accelerate the energy renovation process for homes in the province of Girona with the goal of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals within the framework of the 2030 Agenda.
